Backpack Buddies feeds hungry children in your neighbourhood. Hungry kids often rely on school-based meal programs during the week, and then suffer in silence over weekends—and other school breaks—when meal support is scarce. Backpack Buddies fills this “weekend hunger gap” by discreetly providing bags of food directly to kids every Friday. These bags contain enough meals and snacks to last the weekend and beyond, ensuring kids return to school nourished and ready for the week ahead.
Children across BC are hungry. 1 in 5 children live with food insecurity—unsure of where their next meal is coming from. This has a profound impact on their lives. Kids who arrive to class hungry can lose up to two hours of productivity per school day and make slower gains in math, reading and comprehension. They also have poorer physical and mental health than their peers. Persistent hunger can set a child back for life.
Backpack Buddies History
Backpack Buddies began in 2012 when a mother-daughter duo joined forces to provide 20 backpacks filled with food to children in East Vancouver. What began as weekly bags of food delivered from the trunk of their car quickly gained momentum as communities rallied around the simple and direct solution to feed hungry children.
Every week, we deliver up to 6,000 bags of food to children who may otherwise go hungry.
