We’ve lost our first music legend of the new year. Rick Hall, the record producer behind “Fame Studios” in Muscle Shoals, Alabama passed away yesterday at 85. There’s a great documentary on Netflix called “Muscle Shoals”, where you will meet Rick and the musicians called the Swampers who played on hundreds of hit records recorded there. It all began in 1966 when Hall recorded Percy Sledge. When his single “When a Man Loves a Woman” hit number one, Jerry Wexler at Atlantic records started bring his artists to Muscle Shoals. Soon everyone from Ottis Redding and Wilson Pickett to Aretha, and the Stones were recording there. And a young Duane Allman cut his guitar chops playing for Rick Hall as well.
