Heading into Halloween, B.C. health officials are reporting 272 new cases of COVID-19, taking the total in the province to 14,381 cases.
That includes seven new cases across the Interior Health Authority, taking the total here to 741 cases, 87 of which are active cases.
Active cases across the province are up to 2,390, with a new record 6,003 people being actively monitored by public health teams after an exposure to COVID-19.
There was one new death reported taking the death toll from COVID-19 to 263 people, while hospitalizations are down from 86 to 78, with 25 people in ICU at this time.
“As we all enjoy Halloween tomorrow, make it about the treats and not the tricks. Respect homes that are choosing not to participate this year and give everyone the space to stay safe, both indoors and outdoors,” said a statement from the Health Ministry.
“Now is not the time for parties or large gatherings in our homes. Instead, let’s spend time with others in a safe way, outside or in venues that have COVID-19 safety plans in place.”
The province is also reminding people about an order that limits the number of people who can be in a private home.
“The provincial health officer order is in effect and surveillance will be increased for the weekend ahead,” added the statement. “Let’s make this weekend a safe and fun experience by keeping our groups small and by practicing our COVID-19 sense.”
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry also granted new powers allowing regional medical health officers to issue stricter public health orders in their respective jurisdictions.
“[Regional medical health officers orders] may add further prohibitions, or impose more restrictive limitations or conditions, with respect to gatherings and events in the geographic area of the province, or a part of the geographic area of the province, for which the medical health officer is designated,” her order posted this afternoon said.
There are now 11,670 people who tested positive for COVID-19 who are considered to have recovered.
