April marks National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Month. Among the countless stories that illuminate the importance of this cause, one stands out: Logan Boulet, a promising hockey player tragically lost in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. In the face of unthinkable grief, Logan’s family chose to honour his wishes and donate his organs, a decision that touched hearts nationwide. This act of kindness bestowed the gift of life upon six individuals and ignited a movement of compassion across Canada.
By registering as organ and tissue donors, we continue his legacy of empathy and extend hope to those in need. It’s a simple yet profound gesture with the power to transform lives.
Organ donation is a beacon of hope, a beacon we honour by adorning ourselves in green on April 7th. Learn more!

On April 6, 2018, Canadians were heartbroken to hear the news of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. Of the 29 passengers, sixteen lost their lives and thirteen will all bear physical and emotional scars for life.
On April 7, 2018, Humboldt Broncos defenceman Logan Boulet succumbed to his injuries. His parents, Bernadine and Toby Boulet offered to donate his organs so that six lives could live on. They did so because Logan told his parents he was registering as an organ donor and that he was inspired by his coach and mentor Ric Suggitt. Ric passed on June 27th, 2017 and was also an organ donor and saved 6 lives.

BC Transplant Organ Donor Awareness Month
- Only 1-2% of deaths in hospitals occur in a way that allows for organs to be donated
- One donor can save up to 8 lives and tissue for up to 75
- 92 was Canadas oldest organ donor and 104 for tissue
- 90% of Canadians say the support organ donation, but only 32% have registered
- The number of patients waiting for transplant: 536
- 250 Canadians die annually waiting for an organ transplant
- Myth Buster: Doctors always prioritize saving your life, and organ donation is only considered after all life-saving efforts have been exhausted. Two doctors not involved in transplantation must declare death before organ donation can proceed. Let‘s spread the truth and encourage more people to register as donors.
