Interior Health says it has begun administering COVID-19 vaccine to workers in high-risk locations, including at industrial work camps, and congregate living settings.
The health authority says it has received 6,500 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from the province, with plans to complete these targeted immunizations over the next few weeks.
“[The] additional supply of COVID-19 vaccine makes it possible to direct immunizations toward these high-risk workers in select settings such as food processing facilities, work camps, Big White Mountain, farms and nurseries,” an Interior Health statement said.
“Interior Health has identified eligible employers and is working directly with them to arrange vaccine scheduling.”
Interior Health says vaccinating people in these high-risk settings reduces the risk of outbreaks while also contributing to decreased community spread and transmission. Earlier today, Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry said there were concerns about a third wave of COVID-19 as variants of concern cases continue to increase.
NL News has reached out for more information about eligible employers and workers in the Kamloops and Merritt areas.
As part of the province’s age-based immunization campaign, seniors aged 78 and up can call to book their COVID-19 vaccine appointments today, after the province revised their schedule last week. People over 77 can start booking tomorrow, those over 76 can start calling on Thursday, while seniors over 75 are eligible this Saturday.
To book an appointment, you’re asked to call Interior Health at 1-877-740-7747, though the province has said it will be moving to a provincial vaccine booking system by April 6.
