- Don’t store personal files on your work-issued laptop or phone. If you’re fired, the laptop is the first thing your employer will retrieve, and anything on it is fair game in a lawsuit.
- Don’t use Google Docs, Slack, or similar tools for anything you don’t want your employer to see. These cloud based offerings may seem safe, but if they really want to, employers can find out most of what’s there.
- Assume your internet traffic is monitored. While this isn’t necessarily nefarious, if your productivity is down, don’t be surprised when you hear about how much time you’re spending on Facebook.
- Be more careful with your computer when you’re in public. Always be vigilant when using your laptop in public; lock it when you leave, and use common sense when using a public wi-fi.
