It was June 28th, 1969 that Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline hit the charts. 50 years later it’s easily Neil’s best known, and most loved song.
According to Songfacts.com, the song is actually about Diamond’s second wife, Marcia Murphey. He needed a three-syllable name to fit the melody, however, so “Sweet Marcia” didn’t work. Then one day Neil saw a cute photo of Caroline Kennedy, President Kenndy’s daughter, in a magazine. Diamond said “It was such an innocent, wonderful picture, I immediately felt there was a song in there.” So Sweet Marcia became Sweet Caroline, and the rest is music history. Neil has been singing the song proudly ever since as you’ll see in this video of a recent live recording. Enjoy.
