Guess what’s turning 70 this week? 7 decades old and still going strong. It’s the LP record. Columbia records introduced the 33-rpm long play record this week in 1948. With the LP artists and record producers could fit up to 23 minutes of music on each side of the disc, compared to the 3 minutes per side on an old 78-rpm records that were popular at the time. LP’s would take over the record market for the next 40 years until CDs came out in the 80’s. And who would have predicted that the LP might just out last the CD too? Vinyl is back, experiencing a resurgence thanks to its warm sound and novelty. CD’s on the other hand are getting harder and harder to find. Best Buy will stop selling them this summer.
