This was me five years ago last month, post op after undergoing a radical prostatectomy. I got prostate cancer at the age of 52. I was lucky, it was caught early. My dad had had it, my grandfather had died from it. So my doctor was very proactive. I was getting a prostate exam every year and a PSA (prostate specific antigen blood test) every two years. When my PSA suddenly jumped my doctor sent me to a urologist. During the digital exam the urologist felt something unusual. A biopsy confirmed I had the big “C”.
After diagnosis there are a number of different options for treatment. My cancer was aggressive so I chose surgery. But the most important thing is catching it early before it spreads. That’s why guys need to get checked, especially if you’re over 50.
One in 7 dudes ends up getting prostate cancer. I was only 52. My buddy Pat got it at 56. His brother Jay got it at 58. Prostate cancer is no longer just grandpa’s disease. I’m happy to say I’m fully recovered and cancer free for five years now. Wearing plaid for dad is a simple way to remind the guys in your life to be proactive and get that prostate checked. Don’t fear the finger. It can save your life.
It saved mine.
